Natural light changes throughout the day, giving us several distinct ways to shape the mood of a portrait. The location, time, and weather all help us choose the approach that best fits you.

Open Shade
Soft, even, and dependable.
On Denver's many bright, sunny days, open shade gives us soft, even light without the harsh shadows of direct sun. A thoughtfully chosen shaded location creates flattering, dependable conditions for natural light portraits.
Overcast days offer a similar softness because the clouds diffuse the sunlight for us. A cloudy day can be a photographer's best friend.

Golden Hour
Warm, luminous, full of atmosphere.
The hour near sunset brings warm color, gentle contrast, and a soft glow that feels relaxed and cinematic. It is a beautiful choice when you want a portrait with warmth, presence, and a little atmosphere.

Window Light
Soft, dimensional, naturally flattering.
A large window creates beautiful, soft light that is especially flattering for portraits. This portrait of my friend Akilah shows how gradual transitions create dimension and gentle shadows while keeping the result natural.
Shooting indoors also gives us a dependable alternative to unpredictable weather. A large window with sheer curtains or a north-facing window can provide excellent conditions while helping us avoid harsh direct sunlight.
